Whilst activists use the phrase “Human Rights” everyday, the words remain jargon to the person on the street. But ask the same person if he/she has been treated unfairly and you would most probably get a mouthfull.

How does one transform from being merely aware of human rights into someone who internalises the concept? This documentary looks for the answer by following the stories of three different profiles whose lives were transformed by their own experience of human rights violations.

“Mari Kita Beraktivism” is a series of short films that tell the stories of ordinary folk whose lives have been transformed by their experiences with human rights.

In “Best la Punk”, Kechik and Ebrahim, two seemingly ordinary urban youths, share how their interest in punk music initiated them into a different perspective of life and society.

“Binatang pun perlu tanah” follows the process of how Sinui Pai Nanek Sengik(SPNS), an Orang Asli community organisation transformed from being passive victims to actively fighting for their survival.

”No damn right” features the moving story of two time ISA detainee, Saari Sungip and his wife, Aliza as they share their bitter sweet experience of fighting for justice as a family.

Director and producer, Anna Har and Brenda Danker of Big Pictures Production will, as well as the main profiles in the video, be present for discussion after the screening.

The votes are in and the results out. After a gruelling interview session with five of the shortlised film makers, of which one consisted of a Skype conference call overseas, (see, we at KOMAS are technologically advancing!) three filmmakers were chosen from some very interesting submissions indeed. But sadly only three can receive the RM5,000 to help turn their ideas into real and daring Human Rights films. A responsibility we hope they will all take very seriously. Anyway, I shall say no more as I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise. Join us on Friday from 7pm to 9pm when one of our four judges; Edmund Bon, Dina Zaman, Benjamin Mckay or Brenda Danker will officially announce the winners . Plus KOMAS will screen their newest Human Rights Video entitled “Mari Kita Beraktivism” - a series of short films about ordinary folks and their transforming experiences with Human Rights. Hope to see you all there fighting the good fight!

TA DAAAAAAA! Introducing the brand spanking new FreedomFilmFest website for 2008! Gosh, it took a wee while but we finally made it thanks to web developer Kris Khaira. We’ve added, subtracted and moved some things around so if you can’t find what you are looking for please drop us an email and we will get Kris to find it haha! There will soon be a links page to other film resources on the net and around the world plus plans to upload all the FFF films from the last five years are in the offing.

We are still playing with the site but if you have any suggestions or comments please speak up. Also if you have any content you’d like to publish that is relevant i.e. pictures from past FFFs, opinion pieces, letters or maybe just a shout out, you can send it to us or use the new ‘comments’ function cos we wanna make this a two way thing. Dialogue people, let’s have one!
