The night’s event started with FreedomFilmFest2010 Coordinator, Maisarah introducing the winning filmmakers Sheridan Mahavera & Siti Nurbaiyah and their winning film “Kisah Tauke Mancis dan Minyak Tumpah” which was screened together with the other 2 winning films namely “Pilih” by Loo Que Lin, “Hak Dinafikan” by Abri Yok Chopil & Shafie bin Dris.

Arul Prakkash, senior coordinator for KOMAS and Maisarah facilitated the discussions that followed in order to provide an open platform for the audience to understand the issues and comment on the subjects depicted in the films.

Film makers Sheridan Mahavera and Siti Nurbaiyah were able to point out that their film which showed the controversial ‘cow-head protest’ incident was not a story about religious or racial matters but it was about good governance. Furthermore Orang Asli first time film makers Shafie bin Dris and Abri Yok Chopil were able to discuss about the plight of the orang asli in their struggle to defend their ancestral land rights.

This year the KOMAS FreedomFilmFest2010 also made 2 additional film screenings stops in order to make these films more accessible to those outside the main city. These community-based screenings were inline with KOMAS’ hope and aspiration to reach out to a wider audience. At the Southern College in Skudai, the event reached out to a mainly students and teachers audience while at the Riverside Hotel in Muar, it was for a mixed audience from the general public.

KOMAS FREEDOM FILM FESTIVAL 2010
The KOMAS FreedomFilmFest was back in full force this year. This year’s event was even more exciting and high profile because it was “V.I.P.” studded” as this was the first time KOMAS collaborated with the Selangor State Government to host the premier event in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It was also the first year that the European Union was the sponsor of the programme.
This opening leg of the 4-city premier screening tour of KOMAS’ 7th FreedomFilmFest 2010 was held at the Menara PKNS, Petaling Jaya from the 16th and 17th October 2010.
YB Rodziah Ismail, Selangor State Exco member & Chairperson for Welfare, Women’s Affairs, Science, Technology and Innovation and Culture committee launched the evening’s premier event to a packed hall of about 450 people.
His Excellency Vincent Piket, Ambassador of the European Union and his team was also there to grace the event and shared encouraging words in the festival. Among the other VIP guests were also his Excellency Paul Bekkers, Ambassador of the Netherlands, Dr Thomas Knirsch Country Director for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and also a distinguished representative from the German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
The main highlight of the annual FreedomFilmFest was the much-anticipated Awards Ceremony.
The three teams of winning film makers Loo Que Lin, Sheridan Mahavera & Siti Nurbaiyah and Abri Yok Chopil & Shafie bin Dris each received the “Justin Louis Award” as part of the prize.
FFF2010 film competition Judges Martyn See (Singapore), Dr Mustafa K. Anwar (Malaysia), and KOMAS Board Member Ms Anna Har, together with the other distinguished VIP guests were there to hand out the awards.
The climax was complete with the declaration of the winning film “Hak Dinafikan” by Orang Asli film makers Abri Yok Chopi & Shafie bin Dris as “The Most Outstanding Human Rights Documentary” among the three FFF2010 Film Proposal Competition winners.
The awards ceremony paved the way for the premier screenings and discussion sessions for each of the 3 winning films. Audience members boldly expressed their anger, sadness, appreciation along with their critical comments and opinions during these open discussion sessions.
They were also able to share their views on various subjects with the winning filmmakers and invited resource person including social activist Hishamuddin Rais, Orang Asli Network coordinator Tijah Yok Chopil and Student activist Fahmi Reza. The democratic space and spirit promoted in the entire festival truly expresses KOMAS’ aspiration to use popular communication media tools such as the powerful film medium for community education and sharing.
The 2-day film festival also screened 14 other local and international human rights films and was attended by more than 1,000 people. The documentary films covered vast issues including police powers, urban poor, migrant workers as well as the use of nuclear as an alternative source of energy.
The Festival also provided a physical “freedom space” for an interesting collective of local non-governmental organisations to highlight their human rights works, campaigns and issues. The groups who set up their booths included SUARAM, JERIT, Amnesty International, Pink Triangle, SABM and EMPOWER. There were also stalls which showcased handicrafts and wares produced by Orang Asli and migrant communities who sold these to generate income for their livelihood in Malaysia.
