CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS

Submission of films for FreedomFilmFest2011

KOMAS is currently seeking submissions for social films or human rights documentaries for the FreedomFilmFest2011 Screenings throughout October 2011. The themes or issues portrayed in the films should be based on any social or human rights.

The FreedomFilmFest is currently in it’s 8th year running and will be held in four different states throughout Malaysia (Selangor, Johor, Penang & Sarawak).

Submissions submitted should be:
- Subtitled in English & Bahasa Malaysia
- Mini DV/DVD format
- Duration of film: Less than 30 minutes
- Deadline: 20 August 2011
- A short synopsis in English & Bahasa Malaysia (less than 200 words).
- A short biography on director (less than 200 words).
- Full contact details enclosed.

On the 22nd of February 2011, FreedomFilmFest 2011 was officially launched at The Brisik Restaurant, Jaya One to signify the start of the human rights film proposal competition this year.  Send in your film proposals before the deadline and stand a chance to turn it into a film!

Lina Tan

Managing & Creative Director for Red Communications

Upon graduating with a Film and Television degree from USM (Malaysia Science University) in 1991, Lina entered into the world of television commercial production, working in production houses in Malaysia as Producer.

In 1999, Lina founded Red Communications to focus on creating innovative and meaningful content. She has created a variety of television programs and commercials, specializing in youth, kids and women issues. Lina believes that content can provide entertainment for the masses and yet be socially responsible, making her company’s mission to inspire change through innovative content.

In 2004 Lina formed a subsidiary company called Red Films which produces feature length films. Beginning with Visits: Hungry Ghost Anthology, followed by Gol & Gincu, “KAMI the movie” and recent release “Pisau Cukur” (Gold diggers).

Member of the Malaysian Parliament for Klang, Selangor

Charles Santiago is a Malaysian politician and is currently Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Klang constituency in Selangor. He is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) party in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition.

Santiago was first elected to Parliament in the 2008 election winning the seat of Klang from the governing Barisan Nasional coalition. Prior to his election, Santiago was an economist and worked for non-governmental organisations such as the Coalition Against Water Privatisation and Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation Malaysia.

Shufiyan Shukur


Senior Producer at Malaysiakini.TV

Shufiyan’s background has been in public relations and journalism (The Leader, The Sun, Cambodia Times). Shufiyan’s involvement with web video started in 2002 as content provider for Cyberjaya.tv and Malaysia.tv, the two pioneering initiatives for video ‘broadcast’ through the internet.

At the end of 2006 Shufiyan joined Malaysiakini to manage Malaysiakini.tv. Malaysiakini.tv’s primary focus is to provide audio visual support for Malaysiakini.com though they have played a prominent role in covering issues that concern the Indian community temple and settlement demolition, displacement of former estate workers and so forth.

Anna Har


Director of Big Pictures Production and Board Member of KOMAS

Anna served as KOMAS Programme Coordinator for four years before pursuing her postgraduate to obtain a Masters in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths College, London. She specializes in developing community-based audiovisual units and support services for grassroots. She has extensive experience in producing social documentaries about Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Anna was formerly the Creative Director of a Malaysian television production house and has since then established her own company Big Pictures Production. She is also the advisor supporting all the productions of winners films since the FreedomFilmFest competition started.
